It happens – we have all had on-again, off-again relationships, and it seems we never know what our status is. It can be a very frustrating situation, so the question becomes: what to do though to end the cycle? We asked some of our favorite experts!
1. Frequent breaking up and getting back together is a sign of deeper issues related to love and relationships for both people involved.
These kinds of issues do not typically resolve themselves, and usually tend to cycle and repeat, advises Dr. J. Cilona, Manhattan-based clinical psychologist. This can result in a lot of wasted time, heartache, and other negative emotions. Don’t get caught in the break make up trap. Instead, take some time to work on yourself and figure out your own issues. Try educating yourself with books related to what you think your issues are, talking to friends and family about what they observe in you, and experiment with seeking out the help of a trained professional to see if you find that helpful.
2. Sex creates an artificial bond that you may be confusing with love.
When a woman has an orgasm she releases the hormone oxytocin, explains Dawn Maslar, author of the soon to be releasedThe Broken Picker Fixer. Oxytocin causes a woman to bond. When you run back and jump in bed, you don’t know if it is really love or just a hormone high.
3. The overwhelming majority of relationships with multiple break ups do not ultimately work out.
There is a simple deeper wisdom and message in this phenomenon that people engaged in it are missing: If you’re breaking up and making up over and over again, that’s not likely the person for you, says Dr. J. Cilona, Manhattan-based clinical psychologist. Time spent continuing in the cycle usually just ends up lost. No lessons learned, little or no pleasant memories, and most people end up even more vulnerable to the same kinds of problems in their next relationship despite the usual resolve to “never date someone like that again!”
4. The constant relationship roller coaster is destined to lower your self-worth.
Many times we return to a relationship not because we should, but because we want to avoid the pain, points out Dawn Maslar. Walking through the pain of a break-up strengthens us and the healing process enhances our self-worth. Conversely, running back to a relationship that is not in our best interest erodes our self-esteem.
5. Every time you go through the same cycle it can gain more and more power over you and be come harder and harder to break.
Think of like practicing to learn to ride a bike. The more you do it the better you get at it and eventually you start doing it without even thinking about it. You’re not only practicing poor skills in your break up/make up relationship, but also getting better and better at them for all your future relationships. Stop practicing bad habits and start learning some good ones, says Dr. J. Cilona.
6. Lose credibility with your friends.
If you have ever spent hours on the phone with a girlfriend going through a break up, only to have her return to the jerk a week later, you know what I am talking about. When we go through a break-up we tend to reach out to our girlfriends for support. Many times we spend hours, going over a laundry list of why he was no good. “We paint such a convincing picture of the perfect louse, that if we return to him our friends are baffled!” Says Dawn Maslar
7. Prevents the one you really should be with from getting to you.
When you are caught up in an on-again off-again relationship, you are not available for another relationship, correctly points out Dawn Maslar. (Who hasn’t been there???) You never know if the guy behind you at Starbucks was the one for you because you were too preoccupied in your current relationship drama to stop and talk with him.

Why Do So Many Relationships Fall Apart?
Relationships
Building and maintaining satisfying relationships is one of the hardest things we do in life. Strong and healthy relationships require dedicated effort, a willingness to learn some essential skills and attitudes, and an ability to change and grow over time.
Too many relationships fall apart because people take them for granted and don’t pay attention to them. Once the initial courtship is over and the relationship is secured, it is too easy to fall into a routine with your partner and focus on other aspects of life. Many relationships fall apart because people simply do not understand what it takes to keep a relationship working for both partners. A relationship is a living thing and like any other living thing, it must be tended to, nurtured, and provided with the essential ingredients for survival.
Tending to a relationship means that you notice when there is a problem and then you do what you need to do to fix the problem. The health of a relationship can be measured in terms of the degree of connection between two people and the quality of that connection. To build a strong connection with your partner, you must learn how to talk to each other on an emotional level; you must endeavor to spend time together and to share interests; you must find ways to work with each other to achieve agreed upon goals; and you must attend to the wellbeing of each other. If you don’t make a concerted effort to do these things with your partner, the connection between you will weaken and eventually dissolve.
Most people are pretty good at building a connection with their partner. Once you have built this connection, your work is not done – it is vital that you nurture this connection. To nurture means to love, and love is in the doing. You may say that you love your partner, but do you translate that love into your behavior on a day-to-day basis? When you nurture your partner, your love is visible. You will do things for your partner even when you don’t feel like it, or when it is not easy or convenient. You will do these things because you are paying attention to your partner and you notice that this particular action is needed from you in the moment. It may be something as simple as reaching for your partner’s hand, or maybe it is just listening to their day, or going to their business function when you would rather stay home and read a book.
Nurturing is also expressed in the form of basic respect, courtesy and graciousness. Consciously incorporate these aspects into your relationship. Show your respect and appreciation by saying “please” and “thank you”. Be as kind to your partner as you would be to a co-worker or even a stranger. Speak highly of your partner’s attributes and focus on their strengths when you communicate with others. Say you are sorry when you are wrong and forgive your partner for being human. While these may all be seem to be little things, they are everyday things and your love needs to be visible every day. If you water a houseplant only when you feel like it, the plant will not survive. So too, if you only nurture your relationship when you feel like it, the connection between you will wither and die.
Another very important way of nurturing your relationship is to truly see your partner as a separate and unique person, not just as a reflection of you. Do you know what is essential to your partner? What are their deepest needs, desires, and beliefs? Are you paying close enough attention to see when those things evolve and change? And, are you willing to support your partner in their efforts to explore, develop, and grow as a human being?
A relationship is both strong and delicate. It is strong because two people can stay together even though they may have major arguments, experience a painful tragedy, or discover a fundamental betrayal. A relationship is also very delicate because the big and small hurts of every day, if not gently recognized, cared for and healed, will accumulate over time until the sheer weight of them will shatter the relationship. Your relationship needs the continual healing balm of acknowledgment, apology, and forgiveness for the small and big hurts. Ignoring them will not make them go away. You must make the effort to deal with the issues that arise every day to ensure that the delicate strands of your connection stay healthy and resilient.
If your relationship is going to thrive, you must also be willing to learn some basic skills and attitudes. Our ideas about what constitutes a marriage and family are formed by our experience within our family of origin. There are always different and better ways of doing things, and what worked for your parents is not necessarily going to work for you. You live in a different time and different things are required of you and your partner.
Most people today want a relationship to be a true partnership even though you may fulfill different roles during various times in the relationship. Don’t make assumptions and don’t slip into automatic behaviors. Read about relationships, talk to other people, and attend workshops to develop your communication skills, relationship skills, and problem-solving skills. Think about what is important to you and clarify your goals and values and then discover these things about your partner. Talk to each other about your deepest fears, needs, questions, and hopes.
Adults grow and change over time and if a relationship is going to withstand the test of time, it has to change too. Throughout the life-span, internal and external processes and events interact to shape and define a person. The joys, tragedies, and daily grind of life change us physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. The person you are today is different than the person you were a year ago. People experience psychological growth at different times and in response to different experiences. If you are not paying attention to what is going on in your relationship, this growth will result in you and your partner drifting apart.
How do you know when it is time for the relationship to change? The answer is when it stops working. You know it stops working when you encounter tension and conflict. A natural reaction at times of conflict is to dig your heels in, fight for your position, and try to get the other person to change. People in successful relationships have learned to do the opposite; they pool their strengths and try to find ways to meet the needs of both people in the relationship. There is an attitude of openness, cooperation, and negotiation. During times of conflict, talking and listening increases rather than decreases. Change is understood as being necessary rather than resisted, and is anticipated as a time of growth and learning. When a relationship is open along these dimensions, it is flexible and able to adapt to the changing needs of the individuals and the ongoing demands of the external environment.
Does all of this sound like a lot of work? It is. It takes time, effort, attention, and a life-long willingness to learn and change to keep a relationship vibrant and strong. Try doing some of these things and you will be surprised. Along with the work, there is also excitement, passion, and a full engagement in the process of life. In our most intimate relationships we have the opportunity to find ourselves, to fully express all that we are, and to discover the full meaning of love.

14 things that shows you are single and in need of help
Being single is fun if you ask me. I see it as when I can do things I want without having to answer anyone. I don't need to check to know if I am cheating on someone or even crossing lines. Although, others may have contrary opinions but I still maintain that I am never as free as when I am single. Some people choose to be single while otherscan't help being single (not their fault so don't blame them).
You can be single and be happy but there are times when you feel you are left out. Even though being single rocks, it still have some awkward sides too. And at this point you would realize that you need help.
So here are some things that shows you need help getting pulled out of your status. Most single persons will understand and definitely relate to these:
1. When your friends always try to set you up with a “friend of a friend of a friend of theirs” and your reply is "No, I’m not interested in meeting him or her" then know that they already feel sorry for your status and you may want to take their advise.
2. Some people, especially relatives, siblings or parents start telling you that you need to find someone; then your status is already blinking red! Too bad I don't have a word for you here.
3. When someone turns up and constantly ask why you don’t have a boyfriend or girlfriend. Awwwwch! The question alone puts you in an uncomfortable situation. Even though you keep asking why they are so interested in your personal life.
4. You feel out of place when you hang out with a couple. Seriously, I know the feeling so well. I almost ran mad when I went out with my friend and her date! Yuck! I can clearly remember the look they gave me while talking! I felt like an outcast, so out of place and so awkward till I left them. Brrrrrrrrhhhhh. In such situations you will realize that your status is no longer helping.
5. Your friends in a relationship are always talking about their relationships both the good and bad side. This can be so bad especially when they are in need of someone with "experience" to talk to and you are the nearest person. I remember when my friend needed relationship advice and I was the only one around to talk to. She threw awkward glances at me before she could open her mouth to say something. Like she wasn't sure how I will take it. After pouring out her mind, I just told her what I knew from what I got reading books, attending events and watching others. She looked at me for a while wondering where that had come from. If you always find yourself in such situation I think you need to row your boat in a different direction.
6. Seeing a romantic movie alone in the cinema or at home sometimes makes you feel really lonely and maybe depressed. This happens to me a lot. Here you may decide to upgrade.
7. People start giving you advice on how best to get a boyfriend or girlfriend. You start hearing things like “You know you’d get a boyfriend if you start dressing to kill" or "Girls will come crawling if you start flaunting the cash" blah blah blah. At this point, just know that they see you as incapable of giving yourself advise.
8. When your ex or past dates start feeling sorry for you and think they can just slide back in out of nowhere, then I think your single state is turning into something else. At this point you may want to scream "I AM SINGLE NOT DESPERATE!"
9. When people find it hard to believe you are single then you may become shaky. Guys are always like “Rosy, How are you single? and you’re all tall, pretty blahhhhhh." And I will be like "I know, its amazing right?" Though, deep inside I may feel like its becoming a problem.
10. Some people begin to suspect or ask if you’re gay or lesbian. Huh? I am single doesn't mean the opposite sex disgust me! When you start hearing these then you may really be in need of help.
11. When people begin to tell you that you’ve been single for too long (-0-). Dearie, someone cares and they no longer find it funny seeing you lonely always. At this point you need a rethink.
12. When its a cool evening and your friends are out as couples and you’re at home watching TV. Hmmmmmmm. Then you hold your popcorn tight and say "I’ll just be here by myself having fun alone". Chill, your popcorn have someone already.
13. Sometimes when you start getting the feeling that you just want someone around because it can be nice then you really need to have someone around.
14. When you get a little sick of hanging out with yourself all the time. Though you’re completely amazing, but too much of hanging out alone can be bad. Then you may be in need of someone to hang out with.
Are you single? What are those things you experience that screams GET SOMEONE in your face?

Relationships today are harder now because conversations became texting, arguments became phone calls, feelings became subliminal messages, getting sex became easy, the word "love" is used out of context, insecurities became a way of thinking, getting jealous became a habit, trust is hard to come by, lies to cover up lies up, being hurt became natural and leaving became the only option. Sad but true, so if you have something that's worth it..... Don't let it go. But realize it has to be worth it TO YOU.
